The rise of artificial intelligence has touched nearly every aspect of modern life, and for many teenagers, that now includes meal planning. Increasingly, adolescents are turning to AI chatbots like ChatGPT to receive personalized nutrition advice and even generate meal plans, often with the goal of weight loss. Although, a modern study reveals a concerning trend: these AI-generated diets may be significantly inadequate, potentially leading to insufficient calorie intake and nutritional deficiencies during a critical period of growth, and development.
Researchers found that AI-created meal plans consistently underestimated energy needs and failed to provide a balanced intake of essential nutrients when compared to plans developed by registered dietitians. This discrepancy raises serious questions about the safety and efficacy of relying on AI for dietary guidance, particularly for young people whose bodies are still developing. The study underscores the importance of professional, human expertise in nutrition, especially during adolescence.
The research, published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition, involved instructing five popular AI chatbots – ChatGPT 4, Gemini 2.5 Pro, Perplexity, Bing Chat-5GPT, and Claude 4.1 – to create three-day meal plans for four 15-year-olds: two boys and two girls, with varying weight statuses. The plans were then meticulously compared to those crafted by a dietitian specializing in adolescent health. The findings were stark. On average, the AI models calculated the daily energy requirement to be nearly 700 calories lower than the dietitian’s assessment – a deficit equivalent to skipping an entire meal.
“We show that diet plans generated by AI models tend to substantially underestimate total energy and key nutrient intake when compared to guideline-based plans prepared by a dietitian,” explained Ayşe Betül Bilen, an author of the study. “Following such unbalanced or overly restrictive meal plans during the teenage years may negatively affect growth, metabolic health, and eating behaviours.”
Macronutrient Imbalances and Potential Health Risks
The study didn’t just highlight a calorie deficit; it as well revealed significant imbalances in macronutrient recommendations. While AI-generated plans tended to overestimate protein intake by an average of 20 grams, they significantly underestimated carbohydrate intake, with a difference of around 115 grams. This resulted in a carbohydrate contribution of just 32-36% of total energy intake, falling short of the recommended 45-50% for adolescents.
These discrepancies are particularly concerning given the critical role of carbohydrates in fueling brain development and physical activity during adolescence. “AI-generated diet plans consistently deviated from the recommended macronutrient balance, which is particularly problematic for adolescents,” Dr. Bilen warned. Researchers suggest the AI models may be relying on generalized or popular diet trends rather than incorporating age-specific nutritional requirements.

Adolescence is a period of rapid physical growth, bone development, and cognitive maturation, making adequate nutrition paramount. Lower energy and carbohydrate intake, coupled with increased protein and fat ratios, could potentially pose risks during this crucial developmental stage. The researchers hope their work will raise awareness about the limitations of current AI models in creating well-balanced meal plans. “Our findings suggest that they may rely on generalised or popular diet patterns instead of fully integrating age-specific nutritional requirements,” Dr. Bilen stated.
