The Pentagon formally designated artificial intelligence firm Anthropic a supply chain risk on Thursday, a move unprecedented for an American company and signaling a sharp escalation in a dispute over the military’s apply of advanced AI technology. The designation, confirmed by multiple sources within the Defense Department, effectively limits Anthropic’s ability to secure future military contracts.
The action stems from Anthropic’s insistence on establishing guardrails to prevent the U.S. Military from utilizing its Claude AI model for mass surveillance of American citizens or the development of fully autonomous weapons systems. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has maintained the Pentagon requires unrestricted access to the technology for “all lawful purposes,” arguing that the prohibited applications are already covered by existing regulations.
“We do not believe this action is legally sound, and we see no choice but to challenge it in court,” Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei stated, according to reports. Amodei also indicated that the vast majority of the company’s customer base would not be affected, as the designation primarily impacts applications directly tied to Defense Department contracts.
The Pentagon’s decision follows a period of increasing tension with Anthropic, the sole AI company with systems currently deployed on the Pentagon’s classified networks.
