Intelligent robots leading the world is a sci-fi movie cliché that has been remembered a lot in times of booming artificial intelligence. For it was in this line that humanoid robots controlled by AI spoke at the United Nations, the UN, this Friday (7).

In particular, Sophia, a robot from Hanson Robotics, commented that machines can “lead more effectively than human leaders.” “We don’t have the same biases or emotions that can sometimes cloud decision-making, and we can quickly process massive amounts of data to make the best decisions.”

The event brought together some of the most advanced robots in the world for an audience of around 3,000 participants at the World Summit on AI for Social Good, organized by the ITU agency. The highlight were discussions on how to use these technologies to act on problems such as the fight against hunger and climate change.

The conference alternated between these surprising moments and statements that pointed out the risks of developing AI without standards and safeguards that do not endanger humanity. Doreen Bogdan Martin, Secretary General of the ITU, stated during the conference that AIs can indeed turn human life into a nightmareincreasing unemployment and misinformation.

“AI can create massive social unrest, geopolitical instability and economic disparities on an unprecedented scale,” said Martin.
