The Air France-KLM Group has revealed plans for an order for 50 Airbus A350 aircraft, consolidating its position as the world’s largest operator of the model. The order, which includes purchase rights for 40 additional aircraft, marks a significant step in renewing the Group’s long-haul fleet, aiming for environmental and economic improvements.
The aircraft orders, which include the A350-900 and A350-1000 models, will be delivered progressively between 2026 and 2030. The flexibility of the order will allow the Group to adapt its fleet to market dynamics and local regulations, optimizing its airline portfolio .
“This order represents a significant milestone in the modernization of our fleet. The Airbus A350, with its exceptional performance, is the ideal choice to meet the needs of our network. It will significantly contribute to achieving our ambitious sustainability goals, including a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions per passenger kilometer by 2030,” explains Air France-KLM CEO Benjamin Smith.
These aircraft will replace older models such as the Airbus A330 and Boeing 777, strengthening efficiency and reinforcing the Group’s sustainability commitments.
The new order complements a previous order for 41 Airbus A350-900s for Air France, of which 22 have already been delivered. Furthermore, Air France-KLM will be one of the first to acquire eight Airbus A350 Full Freighter, intended to renew and expand the company’s cargo fleet.
With a total order of up to 99 aircraft, Air France-KLM is set to become the largest global operator of the Airbus A350 family.
The model embodies the transition to a more sustainable aviation industry, consuming 25% less fuel compared to equivalent previous generation aircraft. Its composition of lighter materials, with 53% composites and 14% titanium, contributes to a reduced environmental footprint.
The Air France-KLM Group is committed to decarbonization, aiming for a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions per passenger kilometer by 2030, compared to 2019. Fleet renewal, together with the use of sustainable fuels and eco-efficient practices, is a essential pillar of this trajectory.
By 2028, 64% of Air France-KLM’s fleet is expected to be made up of new generation aircraft, compared to 5% in 2019.
As of September 25, 2023, Air France-KLM operates 533 aircraft, serving more than 300 destinations worldwide. With more than 220 models on order, including 100 from the Airbus A320neo family, the first deliveries are scheduled for the end of 2023. In doing so, the Group remains at the forefront of innovation and sustainability in the aviation sector.
