Air quality: the National Air Council meets under the chairmanship of Claire Pitollat ​​to launch the work of its new term of office and mobilize stakeholders to carry out actions in favor of air quality

Claire Pitollat, MP for the 2nd constituency of Bouches-du-Rhône, new president of the National Air Council, met on Wednesday June 21, 2023, the first National Air Council of her term, in the presence of Christophe Béchu , Minister for Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion, and Agnès Firmin-Le Bodo, Minister Delegate in charge of Territorial Organization and Health Professions.

The National Air Council is a body for consultation, consultation and proposals to fight against air pollution and improve air quality. This body brings together the main stakeholders in the air sector (local authorities, State, professionals, trade unions, associations, qualified personalities).

On the occasion of this meeting, an overview of the main current air quality issues was produced:

Adoption and implementation of the national action plan to reduce emissions of atmospheric pollutants; Advancement of the national action plan for efficient domestic wood heating; Methodological improvements in the national inventory of atmospheric pollutant emissions with the inclusion of condensables; Ongoing revision of the Ambient Air Quality Directive, which will set new targets for air quality to be achieved in 2030 in line with the guidelines recommended by the World Health Organization in 2021.

The Minister, Christophe Béchurecalled on this occasion its commitment to improving air quality, and the importance of collective work and strong mobilization of all stakeholders:

“The National Air Council is an essential body for designing, deploying and ensuring relevant actions to improve the quality of the air we breathe and protect populations in the most polluted areas. We must act on all the emitting sectors are necessary: ​​to this end, I adopted a national action plan at the end of 2022, which is broken down into sectors and local areas as close as possible to our citizens. We must implement these actions collectively, and I know that I can count on the National Air Council and its members for this purpose, the State being fully mobilized to respond to the challenges and support the deployment of actions. »

The Minister Delegate, Agnès Firmin Le Bodorecalled, for her part, the essential commitment of the Ministry of Health and Prevention in the preservation of air quality.

“Air quality is essential to preserve our health. Air pollution is notably responsible for 40,000 deaths per year. It can cause respiratory problems, cardiovascular disease and adverse effects on our general well-being. To deal with these issues, the National Air Council is an essential body. It plays a key role in monitoring and regulating air quality, as well as promoting measures to reduce pollution. The National Air Council must help build environmental policies, support scientific research and raise public awareness of the importance of maintaining good air quality for our collective health and well-being. »

The president of the National Air Council, Claire Pittolathas indicated :

“It’s a fact, we all see on a daily basis, sometimes without realizing it, the nuisances caused by poor air quality, often through our most fragile loved ones. This affects all territories and too often the least privileged areas. As you know, this is a major issue in protecting the health of our fellow citizens.

Air quality is first and foremost a local issue, the National Air Council will also have to establish itself in our territories. The National Air Council is a valuable tool of public power. Our work must be part of the political discourse at all levels of the territory. »
