The crew of the Embraer 195, operated by Marathon Airlines for Air Serbia, chose Taxiway D5 as the taxiway point for takeoff on Runway 30L. This left the regional jet with only a take-off distance of 1,273 meters. The local air traffic control apparently made the pilots aware of this fact twice. Nevertheless, the crew gave full thrust at 5:38 p.m. But the distance was not enough and the plane overshot the end of the runway. The jet probably collided with an ILS antenna. It wasn’t until around 1,100 meters after the end of the runway that it was fully airborne.

Emergency landing in Belgrade
The collision caused severe damage to the left wing root. The left horizontal stabilizer also took some damage. The aircraft with the registration OY-GDC then flew loops to dump fuel. After around 55 minutes she landed safely back in Belgrade. The passengers were apparently informed that it was a minor incident and that they had to return to the airport for technical reasons. But the whole thing could have turned out differently…

Wet lease for Air Serbia
The company based in Greece specializes in charter and wet lease operations. Marathon also operates a pure Embraer fleet. The E195, which has now had an accident, joined the fleet last autumn. It has the construction number 204 and was initially sold to Flybe in 2008.
