Airbus Commercial Dominance: The Future of the Aviation Industry

Airbus commercial dominance

Airbus dominated Boeing in the order match, notably winning the biggest contract in history, for the airline IndiGo. This becomes the first customer of the European aircraft manufacturer, with now 1,350 aircraft ordered to be delivered in the next decade (264 are already in service). With the other big Indian contract (that of Air India) shared between Airbus and Boeing, the most populous country in the world confirms its status as an eldorado for air transport.

According to calculations by L’Usine Nouvelle, Airbus received 846 orders, options and commitments (compared to 363 at the end of the 53rd edition of the show in 2019) and Boeing 288 orders, activations of options and other commitments compared to 292 in 2019. The true results will be known at the beginning of July when the aircraft manufacturers publish their revised official order book (with the effects of cancellations and postponements).

New dynamic players

THE new players in the light electric aircraft, hybrid, and flying taxis, almost stole the show from the industry giants. VoltAero, Aura Aero, Elixir Aircraft, Blue Spirit Aero, Beyond Aero or even Ascendance Flight Technologies on the French side, but also Universal Hydrogen, EHang, ZeroAvia and Volocopter to name just a few foreign players, have been talked about. And not only by making people dream with non-functional models, but also by reaping harvests of contracts. The 110 aircraft ordered from Ascendance Flight Technologies are a good example.

In the same way, the Ile-de-France ETI Turgis & Gaillard caused a sensation by presenting its Male drone prototype, for Medium altitude long endurance, on the static. Called Aarok, the 5.5 ton aircraft is capable of carrying 1.5 tons of armament. It is positioned as a potential and sovereign alternative to the Reaper of the American General Atomics, for the moment used by the French forces for lack of a tricolor solution.

The rise of eVTOLs

For the first time, a flying taxi (that of the German Volocopter) took off as part of the aerial demonstrations at Le Bourget. Proof that eVTOLs, electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, could navigate increasingly crowded airspace. Stellantis plans to produce them for the American Archer from 2024, in order to meet initial orders. ADP even promises that a commercial flying taxi service will be fully operational for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Defense Europe is progressing

Defense Europe is moving forward, after several years of procrastination, with joint orders for missiles between five countries, a purchase of French drones by Greece, a Franco-German alliance in helicopter engines and the entry of Belgium into the Scaf program (who found colors)… A direct effect of the war in Ukraine, which pushes European actors to show more solidarity.

Decarbonization promises

As we foresaw in our June file, the decarbonization of the sector was on everyone’s mind at Le Bourget, with numerous announcements on SAF (a 1 billion euro factory in Lacq, new commitments from TotalEnergiesfrom EDF with Holcim, and a certification obtained by Global Bioenergies), but also on the hydrogen plane (the Airbus project is moving forward, no offense to its detractors). Airports are even actively preparing for the arrival of electric, hydrogen and sustainable fuel aircraft. It remains to finance and deploy all these technologies so as not to explode the carbon footprint of a sector promised to very strong growth.
