Automated in-flight refueling of combat aircraft, helicopters and drones. Here is a capability which could soon be strategic for the Rafale, the F-15 and of course the Future Air Combat System (Scaf), and which Airbus is working to put to music with its A 330 MRTT. But it constitutes a technological challenge: the operation, delicate and dangerous, requires extreme precision.
To achieve this, the manufacturer has set up a dedicated project, Auto’Mate, bringing together experts from Airbus Defense and Space and Airbus UpNext, the group’s lead researcher in disruptive technologies. Launched in March 2021, it has just reached a decisive milestone via a full-scale demonstration carried out in Spain at the end of November.
