Airline Flight Extensions and Bypassing Conflict Zones: Impact on African Destinations

2023-08-08 14:50:20

The Air Belgium A330 which had taken off in Brussels towards Johannesburg took an hour longer to reach its destination, the Air France company estimates that it will be necessary to provide for an extension of flights to several sub-Saharan airports of up to 15 minutes 2 hours for Chad and South Africa. And on the side of the Lufthansa Group, of which Brussels Airlines is a part, it is planned for some flights an hour or even an hour and a half more, and in some cases, a stopover might even be necessary to refuel.

Because Niger is not the only African country whose airspace must be bypassed: the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), which publishes without prohibiting their overflight a list of conflict zones where we find in particular Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia or even Yemen, recommends to European airlines not to fly over Libya, neighboring Niger. As for Sudan, it has just extended, for the eighth consecutive time since April, the closure of its airspace. It is also recalled that Ukrainian airspace is also closed, for obvious reasons, while Russian skies have been prohibited for a year and a half to Western companies, in retaliation for the similar measure which prevents Russian companies from flying over the European countries as well as the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada.
