Lufthansa has sued the last generation and is demanding compensation.

It is questionable whether the activists can afford it.

Climate sticker of the group “Last Generation” blocked the airports in Düsseldorf and Hamburg on July 13. They caused numerous flight cancellations, which is why Lufthansa has now accused the activists and is demanding compensation.

The requirement applies not only to all flights operated by Lufthansa itself, but also to those of its subsidiaries such as Swiss, Eurowings and Austrian Airlines. The airlines Condor and Tuifly are also examining claims for damages.

“Can lead to claims of several million euros”

According to the Hamburg aviation expert Gerald Wissel, the lawsuits could amount to several million euros. “Overall, there may be claims for damages of several million euros,” he told the “Rheinische Post”.

“There hotels had to be booked for passengers, ticket revenue was lost, Replacement aircraft had to be found, other crews had to be deployed, and a lot comes together.” According to the report, a total of 48 flights were canceled and two were diverted.

Can the activists meet this demand?

According to the “Tagesschau”, the last generation had received around 900,000 euros in donations in 2022. She is said to have spent 535,000 euros of it in the same year. It is therefore questionable whether the organization can pay the claim for damages. If Lufthansa is right, activists could also be prosecuted directly as defendants.

According to “Bild”, the lack of money is already noticeable. Newly arrived activists would no longer be paid for their missions. Also, no more Airbnb apartments should be booked, but the activists will be accommodated in private apartments.

Düsseldorf Airport has filed a criminal complaint

Düsseldorf Airport had previously announced that it had filed a criminal complaint for “dangerous interference with air traffic, disruption of public services, property damage, coercion and trespassing”. The newspaper writes that a conviction for dangerous interference in air traffic could result in a sentence of up to ten years in prison.

However, a spokeswoman for the Düsseldorf public prosecutor’s office told the “Rheinische Post” that, although the suspected damage to property and trespassing are being investigated, there is currently “no sufficient evidence of a dangerous intervention in air traffic”, “since this poses a specific risk to body, life or things of significant value would presuppose”. According to previous knowledge, this was not the case because aircraft were diverted in good time or did not take off at all.
