Ce syndrome is caused by a excessive alcohol consumption by the mother during pregnancybut this study shows that the father can also play a role in the development of this disease. THE fetal alcohol syndrome is a rare condition that can cause prenatal and/or postnatal growth retardationof the facial and central nervous system abnormalities as well as cognitive and behavioral disorders. The researchers found that male alcohol exposures caused greater craniofacial differences than maternal exposures.

During this research, scientists observed that the father’s alcohol consumption before conception had a profound effect on facial organization and on the growth and proportion of different facial features. According to Michael Golding, lead author of the study and an associate professor in the Department of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology at Texas A&M University School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, “This programming effect, which goes through the semen, has a profound effect on the organization of the face”. When it was the father who drank, the researchers observed a profound change in the organization of the baby’s face (source 1).

The results of this study (source 2) have important implications for couples wishing to have a child. The researchers recommend that the two future parents limit or stop their alcohol consumption before conception to prevent the risk of fetal alcohol syndrome. They also suggest to changing warning labels on liquor bottles to raise awareness of these risks and mention that the decision to consume alcohol can have important consequences and change the life of a future child.
