Alec Baldwin’s Rust Case Is Over, Prosecutor Drops Manslaughter Appeal

alec Baldwin Involuntary Manslaughter Case Dismissed

Actor ‍Alec Baldwin will⁤ not face involuntary manslaughter charges ⁤in ‌the tragic⁣ death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins ‌on the set ⁣of the film “rust” in 2021. the case against ⁣him was dropped after a judge dismissed⁣ it, citing prosecutorial misconduct. Special prosecutor Kari ‌Morrissey initially ‌planned to appeal the judge’s ‍decision, but the New Mexico attorney general’s office declined to vigorously pursue the appeal. This‌ effectively ended the legal battle against‌ Baldwin. ‌ Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer threw out the case in July, stating⁤ that‍ the prosecution had failed⁤ to provide key evidence – a cache of bullets – to the defense. She criticized Morrissey’s handling⁤ of the case, ‌describing it as “so near to bad faith as to show signs of scorching.” ‍ baldwin’s attorneys argued that⁢ the prosecution⁤ intentionally withheld the bullets, wich ⁢could have bolstered the actor’s defense. They‌ asserted ⁢that ⁢Baldwin, as an actor, was ⁣not responsible ⁤for gun safety on set and couldn’t have known his gun contained a live round. Morrissey had argued that‍ the judge was misled by the defense and that the bullets ‍were inconsequential to the case. ⁤Tho, the attorney ⁤general’s office’s decision not to aggressively pursue the appeal effectively ended the prosecution’s efforts. “Today’s decision to dismiss the appeal is the⁤ final‍ vindication of what Alec Baldwin and his attorneys have said from the beginning ‌— this was an unspeakable tragedy but Alec ⁤baldwin committed no crime,” Baldwin’s lawyers, Alex spiro and Luke Nikas, said in a ⁣statement. ⁣“The⁤ rule of law remains intact in New Mexico.”

The legal battle surrounding⁣ the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on ‌the ‍set of the film “Rust” has taken another⁢ turn. Special prosecutors have decided to drop the appeal against Alec baldwin, effectively ending the ‍criminal case⁣ against the actor.

The decision comes after‌ a New mexico judge dismissed involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin in April. While the prosecutors,⁣ led by Andrea Reeb, have chosen ⁣not to pursue the case further, they expressed regret that Baldwin “will not be held accountable” ⁤for his role in Hutchins’ death.

“This has always been about seeking justice for Halyna⁣ Hutchins,” ⁤Reeb said in a statement. “We withdraw the appeal with the‍ hope that the outstanding lawsuits⁤ bring some measure of justice to the family of Halyna Hutchins.”

Hutchins’ family, ⁣who reside in Ukraine, was consulted⁤ before the appeal⁤ was withdrawn and voiced their opposition to the decision.

The family‌ is continuing to seek justice through a ‍separate ‍civil case against Baldwin and the film’s ‌producers in a New Mexico state court.

Mary Carmack-Altwies, the elected district attorney in santa Fe, commended ⁣the prosecutors for their handling of the case. She highlighted the conviction of Hannah Gutierrez Reed,⁢ the film’s armorer, who was⁣ found guilty of ⁣involuntary manslaughter for loading a live bullet into Baldwin’s gun. Gutierrez Reed is ⁣currently⁤ serving an 18-month ‍sentence.

The dismissal of charges against⁤ Baldwin⁣ has sparked⁢ debate about the legal complexities and accountability within the film industry. ⁣The tragedy has prompted a closer look at ‌safety protocols on ⁤set, notably regarding the use of ⁣firearms and live ammunition.

“Halyna’s tragic death has prompted industry-wide scrutiny, specifically in⁢ New Mexico,of safety ⁤protocols, especially the use of‍ firearms and live⁤ ammunition on set,” Carmack-Altwies ⁤said. “Halyna’s family set up the Halyna Hutchins ‍Foundation to advocate for safer practices in⁤ the industry, promoting ‍safety education ⁤and honoring her legacy as a talented⁣ filmmaker.”

Carmack-Altwies emphasized that the First Judicial ‌District Attorney’s office remains committed to upholding justice and will continue to prosecute cases with integrity.

Meanwhile, the film “Rust” recently premiered at the EnergaCamerimage Film Festival in Poland.⁤
