Alert, my sink is clogged! What should I do ?

The 3 steps to unclog a sink (easily or not)

#1 Check the condition of his siphon and the arrival of his pipes

Sometimes the problem is simple. A blockage in a drain can be formed by food, produce, or bodily residue that blocks the flow of water. The first step is therefore a visual check. In the most superfluous case, it will be enough to remove what obstructs it so that the stagnant water is no longer.

#2 Use tools!

The most common is the suction cup causing a call for air in the pipe and the other, less widespread, the ferret. This metal rod allows you to scrape or even destroy the plug, but be careful not to damage your pipes. This tool works before the “bend” of the pipe. If the plug is after this one, then you have to go to step three…

Good to know: instead of the ferret, use an unfolded metal hanger.

#3 Use a natural or chemical product

If the natural products didn’t help unclog your sink, then you can use a specific chemical. Sold in supermarkets or in DIY stores, these liquids or gels are extremely abrasive and must therefore be handled with care. Even if the label indicates that the cork dissolves in less than half an hour, we advise you to leave it on overnight for a conclusive result.

Why call on a specialized company to unclog and maintain your pipes?

If, despite all the recommendations mentioned earlier, you are unable to unclog your sink, it is necessary to call on a specialized company. These professionals have specific tools, but also suitable products. Indeed, those sold commercially are reserved for domestic use and despite their degree of danger, they are not as powerful as those used by a company expert in sanitation and in the pipe unclogging.

And then, how do you prevent your sink from clogging?

Remember to place a cup at the bottom of your sink (or a plastic stopper) to prevent food and residue from falling into your siphon. You can also use coffee grounds, white vinegar, and baking soda for prevention once or twice a week. Last recommendation, run the water gently to avoid an accumulation of residues (in addition to doing good for the planet!).
