Alex Albon’s Williams Car Crash at Australian Grand Prix Results in Logan Sargeant Sacrificing Race Spot

Alex Albon destroys his Williams car during training for the Australian Grand Prix. He still takes part in the race – at the expense of his teammate Logan Sargeant.

For Logan Sargeant, the race weekend in Australia ended early – even though he didn’t make any mistakes. After his Williams teammate Alex Albon’s accident in Formula 1 opening training in Melbourne, the American has to hand over his car to the British-Thai driver.

As the English team announced on Friday, Albon’s seriously damaged chassis will have to be taken out of action for the rest of the weekend. Since the cash-strapped racing team doesn’t have a third chassis in stock, Sargeant has to leave his to his stable rival – also in the race on Sunday (5 a.m., live ServusTV).

“In today’s Formula 1, not having a replacement chassis is unacceptable, but it reflects the deficit we were in over the winter and highlights why we need to make significant changes to put ourselves in a better position for the future.” said team boss James Vowles. “As a result, we had some very difficult decisions to make this afternoon.”

Crash into the wall

“This is the most difficult moment I can remember in my career,” admitted Sargeant, who is contesting his second season in the premier motorsport class. The far more experienced Albon, who lost control of his car exiting turn six in training and crashed into the track wall, said: “I have to be completely honest and say that no driver wants to give up their place. I would never want something like that to happen.” At the same time, he praised Sargeant for his character: “Logan was an absolute professional and a team player from day one.” (ed.)
