During a tour in the Galán neighborhood, the candidate for Mayor of Barranquilla Alex Char announced that as of January 1, the pertinent procedures will begin for the city to have its first public medical school, which will operate at the University Institution of Barranquilla (IUB).
“Barranquilla does not have a public medical school. There are four institutions where you can become a doctor, but if a boy from here (Galán neighborhood) comes to study medicine, he has to pay between 15 and 25 million pesos per semester “the candidate told the residents.
Alex committed to the community that, from January 1, 2024, he will begin negotiations with the Ministry of Education so that Barranquilla has the first public medical school in its history.
“It is the dream of thousands of young people, I have fresh information, there are private universities where 1,500 young people arrive and there is only space for 120; In other words, every semester we cut short the dreams of more than 1,000 young people in a single university. We want doctors from our hearts, from our spaces, from our humility and this is going to be revolutionary news for research, for development and, furthermore, one of the most difficult things in medicine is getting internships, but we have My IPS Network -which are 48 public hospitals- where our young people can do their internships”Alex said to applause.
The candidate, from the Cambio Radical political party, maintains his goal of touring the neighborhoods of Barranquilla to listen to people and learn first-hand about the aspects to improve, as well as to make known his proposals to take the city to another level and, in this way, improve the quality of life of citizens.
