MOSCOW: The body of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died under mysterious circumstances while serving a prison sentence, will be cremated on Friday. Navalny’s spokesman, Kira Yarmesh, said the funeral will take place on Friday evening at the church cemetery in Moscow’s southeastern Marino district. Navalny, 47, collapsed and died in Russia’s notorious Arctic Penal Colony prison on February 16. The cause of death is yet to be released.
Even days following his death was confirmed, Navalni’s body was not released to his family members, which became a controversy. Many countries have publicly held Russian President Vladimir Putin responsible for the death of anti-Putin Navalny. Navalni’s body was handed over to his mother eight days following his death was confirmed.
Navalny’s widow, Yulia, has also alleged that the government will try to disrupt Navalny’s funeral and may arrest her.
