The body of Alexei Navalny was given to his mother, Lyudmila Navalnaya, said the politician’s press secretary Kira Yarmysh.
“Alexey’s body was given to his mother. Thank you very much to everyone who demanded this with us. While Lyudmila Ivanovna is in Salekhard. The funeral is yet to come. We don’t know whether the authorities will interfere with carrying them out the way the family wants and as Alexey deserves. We will report information as it becomes available,” Yarmysh said.
FBK Director Ivan Zhdanov thanked everyone who demanded that the body of Alexei Navalny be handed over to his family. “Thank you very much. Thanks to everyone who wrote and recorded video messages. I think Alexey would say that this was and should be done. The body of Alexei Navalny was given to his mother,” Zhdanov said.
Earlier, as Zhdanov said, investigators put forward several conditions that Lyudmila Navalnaya must agree to in order for her son’s body to be returned to her. The investigator demanded that the politician’s relatives and associates keep information about his funeral secret and not hold a public farewell. On the evening of February 23, Navalny’s associates reported that the investigator gave an ultimatum to Lyudmila Navalnaya, demanding that she agree to hold a secret funeral for her son within three hours. Navalny’s mother refused.
On the morning of February 24, Alexei Navalny’s wife Yulia issued an appeal in which she criticized Vladimir Putin because the body of the deceased politician was not given to the family. “Today is nine days since my husband died. Nine days since Putin killed Alexei Navalny. But murder was not enough for Putin. Now he is holding his body hostage,” said Yulia Navalnaya. She called Putin’s faith in God false and accused him of demonism.
