Eight people from the same family, including five children, were killed in a collision between a light vehicle and a semi-trailer on Friday evening in Batna, eastern Algeria, civil protection said in a statement on Saturday. .

The victims are five children aged between 4 and 13, their parents (48 and 45) and their aunt (26), civil protection said, without giving further details on the circumstances of the accident.

Speeding on the roads is the main cause of road accidents in Algeria, according to the National Delegation of Road Safety, a government agency.

In 2021, the country recorded nearly 22,000 accidents which left a total of 3,061 dead and 29,763 injured.

The balance sheet for the year 2022 has not yet been published.
