The Algerian president met his Russian counterpart this Thursday in Moscow. Abdelmadjid Tebboune welcomed, in a statement, “the convergence of views” on the Western Sahara issue, report several Algerian media. “The visions of Algeria and Russia also coincide on the developments taking place in the Middle East region, as well as what is happening in Libya,” added President Tebboune.

For his part, Vladimir Putin claimed to have discussed with his guest “the situation in Ukraine, Libya, Sudan, Western Sahara, as well as the settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict”, indicates Russian media. Last week, during a consultation meeting held in New York between the Security Council and the League of Arab States, the permanent representative of Russia to the United Nations considered that “the situation in most of the States of the Middle East and North Africa remains complicated, due to the many hotbeds of instability in the region”.

To support his version, Vassili Nebenzia cited the “armed conflicts in Syria, Libya, Yemen and Sudan”, before going on to include Western Sahara in his list, thus providing grist for the mill of the Polisario and the ‘Algeria. In the Security Council, Russia has opted in recent years for abstention when voting on resolutions on the Sahara issue.
