On Monday, Algeria decided to withdraw its candidacy for the organization of CAN 2025 and 2027. A choice which may surprise, especially since it came on the eve of the announcement of the host countries. Fennecs legend Lakhdar Belloumi, CAN finalist in 1980, spoke about this unexpected decision.
“This is a sovereign decision taken by the Algerian state and officials of the Algerian Football Federation. We do not know the real reason behind Algeria’s withdrawal from the CAN organization, and the Algerian state is solely responsible for making such decisions. Belloumi agrees with the FAF’s justifications
The reasons put forward by the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), which wishes to concentrate on the development of football in Algeria rather than investing massively in the organization of such a tournament, have visibly convinced the old glory.
“We have enough time to repair Algerian football from the inside, especially since the FAF has elected a new president, Walid Sadi. The priority now is to organize Algerian football from within because we have fallen behind.
