Alibaba Group’s new CEO Eddie Wu told employees that the technology company’s main strategic focus in the future will be “user first” and “AI second,” according to an internal message seen by Archyde.com.

Wu, who sent the letter on Tuesday, his third day in the new position, said Alibaba will also focus on promoting young employees, especially those born following 1985, to form the core of business management within the next four years.

This would help maintain a “startup mentality” and prevent the company from “reverting to the old ways,” he said.

The new CEO, one of the founders of the Alibaba Group and a longtime lieutenant of former President Jack Ma, sets his strategic priorities at an important moment for Alibaba, which is undergoing the largest organizational restructuring in its 24-year history.

Late last Sunday, Alibaba also announced that Wu would concurrently serve as CEO of its cloud computing unit, replacing Daniel Zhang.

This news came as a surprise to many, as Zhang said in June that he would step down from his position as CEO of the group to focus on the cloud division, with the group targeting to launch the division as an independent unit by May 2024.
