According to a survey published by UOL, CNDL (National Confederation of Retail Managers) and SPC (Credit Protection Service), websites of international retailers have already surpassed those of national ones preferred by Brazilians.

The survey data shows that 74.4% of respondents stated that they made international purchases on sites such as AliExpress, Shein, Ebay and also Amazon.

When the 2023 numbers are compared with the first survey of 2021, there is an increase of 29 percentage points in the purchase of products from foreign retailers.

Another relevant point is that the majority of consumers pay in installments for their online purchases (66%), while only 30% make payments in cash.

Therefore, the credit card leads as the most used payment method on the internet (62%), with Pix (58%) displacing the bank slip and the debit card in third place (22%).

The survey data also shows a drop of 9 percentage points in purchases on national websites, reaching 70.6%. Among the points that can influence an online purchase, respondents highlighted free shipping as very important.

Free Shipping (64%) More attractive prices than in physical stores (56%) Reduced delivery time (34%)

Commenting on the results of the survey, José Cesar da Costa, president of CNDL, said that there is unfair competition between national and international retailers.

There is unfair competition in favor of foreign companies due to the fact that a large portion of products cross borders without paying import taxes, which makes them much cheaper compared to national ones. Retailers feel the consequences, as they are unable to compete with the prices of those who do not pay taxes.

With Remessa Compliance, international purchases below US$50 do not pay federal taxes, but there is a 17% ICMS charge.

However, Brazilian retailers are not satisfied with the program and are putting pressure on the government to reinstate the import tax on all purchases.
