A popular hiking trail around Lake Constance in Styria in the upper Ennstal (municipality of Haus, Liezen district) was buried by an avalanche over a length of around 100 meters on Saturday. A large-scale operation to search for buried victims was ended late in the afternoon because no evidence of victims was found, mountain rescue spokesman Enrico Radaelli told APA. The “Kleine Zeitung” first reported on the avalanche.
The Styrian Lake Constance in the upper Ennstal is also popular with many Upper Austrians:
“The hiking trail is already free of snow and can be walked,” Radaelli explained the reason for the large-scale operation. The avalanche cone was searched with dogs and using special radar technology that can locate reflectors in sports clothing. In addition to 60 mountain rescuers, members of the local fire brigade as well as ÖAMTC air rescue and the police with helicopters were involved. Helpers and dogs were sometimes flown to the avalanche cone on the rope.
