The Austrians had traveled with a 16-strong group from the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV). The woman had lost her footing on a steel cable insurance policy, police said. The two fell 50 to 70 meters to their deaths over partly vertical terrain.
Two tour guides from the ÖAV had each led half of the group up the almost 3,000 meter high mountain and back down. The accident only happened on the descent below the “Kuchenjöchli”. The group immediately made an emergency call. Several people also dismounted. However, attempts at resuscitation by the group members were just as unsuccessful as those by the crew of the emergency helicopter. Alpine police and police helicopters could only rescue the dead. The other members of the tour group were brought down to the valley by mountain rescue and the police.
