Employees of the American giant Amazon working in around thirty countries took advantage of “Black Friday” to demand better working conditions by launching a strike movement, particularly in European warehouses.

The strike was launched by the Make Amazon Pay employee collective, which justifies this international movement by the fact that “we cannot oppose a multinational only on a local, regional or even national scale”. He demands fair remuneration for the employees of the online commerce giant and that he renounces tax optimization.

This movement comes on the day of “Black Friday”, a key moment in the bargain hunt for which brands go to great lengths to attract customers.

In the entire Europe

Mobilization is strong in Germany, Amazon’s second largest market in terms of sales. Employees at five order processing centers have been on strike since midnight Thursday and for 24 hours. They are demanding a collective agreement on wages, the Verdi union said.

In England, at Amazon’s Coventry warehouse, more than 1,000 employees will not carry any packages on Friday, according to the GMB union, as part of a long-running dispute over pay. Unionists are also holding a protest at Amazon UK headquarters in London.

The mobilization is also underway in France where the Attac association encouraged activists to stick posters and adhesive tape on Amazon delivery lockers, preventing delivery people and customers from collecting their packages. Attac, who considers Black Friday a “celebration of overproduction and overconsumption,” said she expected the protest to be bigger than last year.

Italian union CGIL also called a Black Friday strike at the Castel San Giovanni warehouse, while Spanish union CCOO called on Amazon warehouse and delivery workers to stage a one-hour strike by team on the occasion of “Cyber Monday”, Monday November 27.

An important day for online commerce

This “Black Friday” day is expected to generate $12 billion in revenue for online commerce in the United States. According to the American Commerce Federation, 182 million people are expected to make purchases in stores and on the internet between Friday and Monday.

In France and Switzerland too, the fever has started in stores and online. On average, the French plan to spend 416 euros, according to an OpinionWay survey for the trade specialist Bonial.
