Amazon Prime Video adds the highest-grossing Nigerian box office film to its catalog

(Ecofin Agency) – Second cinematographic industry in the world by the volume of its films, Nollywood does not however shine for its profitability. To date, no Nigerian film has yet generated a million dollars at the local box office. King of Thieves should achieve this.

Amazon Prime Video will add the Nigerian blockbuster “King of Thieves” to its catalog when it ends its theatrical release. The information was confirmed by the film’s co-executive producer, Niyi Akinmolayan. Released in April, the film became, a few hours ago, the highest-grossing Nigerian production in history. The feat is even more impressive when you know that the film was released in indigenous language.

According to figures published by the specialized press, the film crossed the $700,000 mark. In its eighth week of operation, it is acclaimed by critics. This favorable dynamic makes it one of the most requested African productions by streaming platforms.

When the film ends in cinemas, King of Thieves, which is starting to attract interest outside Nigeria, will be accessible only on Amazon Prime Video. The agreement allows the platform to benefit from an advantage over its competitors for the next few weeks. Netflix had enjoyed a similar advantage with another Nigerian hit, the King of Boys series.
