After more than six years of good and loyal service, AMD’s Polaris and Vega GPUs are preparing to bow out. The next updates, which will be offered separately, primarily concern the security of these graphics cards.

It’s official, AMD has just announced the gradual end of support for Polaris and Vega GPUs, which have been available since 2016 and 2017 respectively. An unsurprising announcement, since AMD recently confirmed the end of the deployment of these updates on Linux. Likewise, the latest driver on Windows (23.10) contains a dedicated package especially for Polaris and Vega cards.

However, AMD considers that these cards have not yet completed their operating cycle. Indeed, from now on, updates for Vega and Polaris maps will be available via a dedicated branch. You will therefore have to go directly through the AMD site to be able to benefit from it.

Moreover, these drivers will mainly focus on security updates. The technologies associated with the RDNA architecture will therefore not be supported by these graphics cards. We are thinking in particular of the Anti-Lag+ system, which was recently the cause of bans on Counter-Strike 2.

End of support for Polaris and Vega: which AMD GPUs are affected?

If you don’t know the architecture of your AMD graphics card, here is a list of all GPUs belonging to the Polaris and Vega families :

AMD Polaris

RX 400/500/600 (desktop et mobile)

AMD Vega

Radeon RX 56 / Radeon RX 64
Radeon VII
Radeon Vega 10 et 11 (iGPU)
APU Ryzen 5000G/4000G/3000G/2000G
APU mobile Ryzen 5000/4000/3000/2000

As for classic updates, AMD has clarified that only GPUs and APUs greater than or equal to the RX 5000 range will be affected. The brand considers that the Polaris and Vega architectures have reached maturity, in addition to being particularly stable. Furthermore, it has been some time since Vega and Polaris cards no longer benefit from the same software improvements. If FSR 1.0 and 2.0 are present, FSR 3 and Fluid Motion Frame (AFMF), introduced during the launch of HYPR-RX, are unavailable.

The only exception that confirms the rule, the RX 590 can use FSR 3. On the other hand, Frame Generation is not there. As you will have understood, if you want to benefit from all of AMD’s technologies, it will therefore be necessary to upgrade to a more recent graphics card. Unless you wait for the RX 7000 which promises to be overpowering.
