Intel and its 13th generation HX-series Cores are giving AMD a hard time in the microcosm of the laptop PC. AMD’s Ryzen 9 7945HX certainly shows more than convincing performance, but it did not surpass the Core i9-13980HX in terms of pure performance, as we could see during our tests.

3D V-Cache, AMD’s no longer so secret weapon

Layering cache on processor cores is AMD’s trick.

However, AMD has an advantage that the processor designer had never used on mobile chips until now: 3D V-Cache technology. The principle is simple on paper: a large amount of cache can boost the performance of a processor, especially in video games. However, the transistors acting as a cache occupy space on a chip whose space is not expandable at will. AMD’s trick is therefore to place these transistors above the processor cores.

Apart from the amount of cache, the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D is identical to the Ryzen 9 7945HX.

AMD

The Ryzen 9 7945HX3D retains the characteristics of the Ryzen 9 7945HX, which consists of 16 multi-threaded cores that can reach 5.4 GHz with a thermal envelope of 55 watts. To this is added 80 MB of 3D V-Cache, which therefore brings the amount of cache to 144 MB.

Over 15% more in-game performance

Thus, according to the panel of games selected by AMD, the performance of the Ryzen 7945HX3D varies from -4% to 53% in FullHD compared to the version without 3D V-Cache. We note a gain of 44% in Cyberpunk 2077 or 16% in Middle Earth : Shadow Of The War.

The winnings vary greatly depending on the game.

AMD also specifies that the gains of 3D V-Cache technology are more substantial on processors with a lower power envelope. The gains thus go from 11% with a 70 watt envelope to 23% with a 40 watt envelope, comparing the two versions of the Ryzen 9.

The Asus Strix Scar 17 X3D will be the only laptop equipped with AMD’s Ryzen 7945HX3D.

AMD

The Ryzen 9 7945HX3D will be available from August 22 in the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 X3D (G733PYV) laptop that we told you about. We will soon offer you a test to observe in practice the gains related to AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology.
