A recent AMD patent describes an application that can automatically perform memory overclocking for Ryzen processors, potentially making it more user-friendly for enthusiasts. The new technology aims to test the stability of memory modules that have been stressed by overclocking and store memory overclocking profiles locally, which will be specified for each user’s system.
System memory overclocking is a well-known process that has received new coverage over the past decade. Originally used to test the level of memory stability in order to still operate at extreme frequency levels or with minimal latency, enthusiasts now stress their systems to break records and win competitions. In 2007, Intel introduced its eXtreme Memory Profiles, or XMP, settings that are stored in a serial presence module for chip detection and run on supporting devices and components.
The recommended or specific XMP settings and profiles are somewhat arbitrary in order to be compatible with a wide range of devices and machines. However, no two user machines are the same, which encourages advanced users to explore the layer with the highest data rate and lowest latency.
The company’s auto-memory overclocking technology attempts to give mid-rangers the ability to tune their memory modules and processors for maximum performance without extensive user testing. Automatic memory overclocking will allow users to use less expensive memory with standard JEDEC settings in SPD to test overclocking limits themselves. This will provide incredible work efficiency without the need for manual input.
AMD’s new overclocking app will allow the system to determine the overclocked memory frequency settings by stepping out of the memory stability test and then selecting the optimal timing settings to run the difficulty selected by the application. After that, the application will generate a specific profile with overclocked memory frequency and latency definitions. From now on, the profile will be loaded by the program every time.
AMD published the patent on May 19, 2022. It is not known when the program will become available to users. However, it is reasonable to assume that the new software is being prepared for use with the new Ryzen 7000 series of processors.
