When AMD made the 5800X3D CPU a few years ago, it was the first CPU in the world with 3D cache, it surprised everyone with its affordability, and beat every other CPU in gaming benchmarks, including Intel and AMD’s top model. So when this generation of AMD’s 7000 series got a 3D version, many were longing for the 7800X3D, which has now arrived.
8 cores, 16 threads, up to 5 Ghz and 120 Watt TDP. AMD is already going strong here, as our copy ran over 5.2 Ghz out of the box with a TDP of just 80 watts and maxed out at 71.1 degrees during testing. It has huge overclocking potential in my opinion, unfortunately it’s a borrowed CPU, but if it were my own I’d probably try to push it up to 5.5Ghz as the first thing. On average, we were gaming with half the cores at 5.124 Ghz. Yes, there’s super easy one-button overclocking in the form of Ryzen Master, with plenty of manual controls for those who want it, but that’s how it works out of the box, literally.
Prices are around £410 – around £130 cheaper than the Ryzen 9 7950X, £230 cheaper than the 7950X3D and £150 cheaper than the Intel i9-13900K. Our test system was definitely an X670E motherboard with a 420mm AIO everything running on NVMe 4.0 drives and a set of G.Skill Trident Z5 DDR5 RAM, only the graphics card could be better as we only have one RTX 4080 available . We could have used our borrowed RX 7900XTX, but the typical 5-8% performance you get when combining the AMD CPU and GPU compared to the Intel CPU would confuse the results and negatively bias in ray traced games . However, the RX 7900XTX was faster than the RTX 4080 in most of our test games, depending on the version, but overall the RX 7900XTX was better.
Let’s jump straight to the benchmarks, everything but the 3D benchmarks are in FPS format and set as high as possible, with ray tracing enabled where possible (though not the “Psycho” quality in Cyberpunk 2077).

It should be noted that no other system, not even the RTX 4090, can achieve such high FPS in 1080p. Its 1440p is measured in millimeters, beating the system with the more powerful and overclocked RX 7000XTX by less than 1 FPS in 4K. However, we achieved higher scores in 4K with the specific liquid-cooled RTX 4090 card.

Here, the CPU briefly worked 1080p and 1440p, but FPS was again as expected in 4K compared to more powerful graphics cards.

Here, the 7800X3D is indeed beaten by its big brother, but it only has a few FPS, and you still barely beat Intel’s i9-13900K in all aspects.
So, what are you waiting for? RAM has dropped to a reasonable level, you can finally buy an affordable motherboard, and the Ryzen 7 7800X3D not only beats the big boys, it beats AMD’s own top model by 10%, in some cases, Intel’s i9-13900K is down 20% (yes, I know there’s a KS, but we couldn’t get one to compare to), and it’s a lot less money. Now, when you need to build a new computer, you only have to sell one lung to buy a graphics card.
