Amending Lebanon’s System: Challenges and Solutions for Political Stability

A member of the “Strong Lebanon” bloc, Representative Salim Aoun, indicated that “our main problem is our system, and I am not talking about a current revolution towards changing it, but rather we must amend it in the coming period in batches.”

Aoun confirmed, in a televised interview, that “there was a complete commitment in the Free Patriotic Movement regarding the vote for the former minister, Jihad Azour, in the session to elect the president by 16 deputies, and there is a question mark over the vote of one deputy, whose name I will not disclose, and when the head of the movement asked the deputy Gebran Bassil, this MP in the movement, “What did you do?” The latter replied, “As I told you,” except that I do not know what the agreement is between them.

He added, “We are sticking to the intersection because we decided from the beginning that we do not want to adopt a candidate and wage his battle. “Even if he has 65, he would not intersect with anyone.” What increased the fragmentation of the current parliament is the absence of the head of the Future Movement, Saad Hariri.

“A meeting is being held in the meantime for the bloc after Basil’s arrival from Qatar to take a position on whether or not to attend the legislative session,” he said.
