Las Vegas Raiders stadium uses Power BI, a business intelligence tool, to optimize the building management system, ensuring comfort and pleasant temperatures for fans in the middle of the desert, with energy savings

São Paulo, April 10, 2024 – The Las Vegas Raiders football team is using Microsoft technology to manage its stadium in a sustainable way. With the use of PowerBI, the Allegiant Stadium, which is expected to host some games of the Americas national team championship, which this year takes place in the United States, is optimizing the control of its building management system to ensure that fans have comfortable temperatures in in the middle of the Nevada desert, where the structure was built, without wasting energy.

The stadium, with capacity for up to 65 thousand fans, was designed with sustainability as a key principle. It is the first NFL arena powered solely by renewable energy. To maintain a pleasant climate inside the venue without having to spend excessively on maintaining refrigeration, the stadium has advanced technology, including a sustainability panel based on Microsoft Power BI. According to those responsible for the project, using the panel to improve climate control should generate a positive impact on the team’s business. “Allegiant Stadium is committed to sustainable practices and we are always looking to make them more efficient. We work to integrate with our local community’s ecological efforts and to actively involve our employees and visitors in our sustainability actions. We want to demonstrate to our fans, customers, employees, players and community that we are conscious stewards of the environment”, says Sandra Douglass Morgan, president of the Los Angeles Raiders. “Our programs include waste reduction to minimize impact on local landfills through reusing, recycling or donating a wide variety of materials. We also separate all trash to isolate recyclable materials so they can be processed correctly. Biomass machines on site process around 300 kg of items collected in a 24-hour period”, explains the executive.

Morgan explains that the stadium has also incorporated energy efficiency into its infrastructure, lighting and landscaping, as well as optimizing its building management system with a Microsoft Power BI dashboard, which ensures temperatures make fans feel comfortable without there is high energy consumption. According to Scott Erdmann, senior director of Corporate Partnerships for the Raiders, sustainability is a big focus for Allegiant Stadium and the entire team, as well as being a big focus for Microsoft. “When we realized this alignment, it was natural to discover how we can make all this happen together. After a series of workshops, it became clear that this collaboration had everything to work out. Microsoft has deep knowledge and experience in sustainable solutions that have really helped us extract value from our data. We know that the company is always developing new cutting-edge technologies like the Cloud for Sustainability that we have started to explore with this initiative,” he says.

Joseph Wright, senior director of Facilities Operation at the stadium, explains how Power BI works to maintain a pleasant temperature, without spending a lot of electricity on this task. “We have a very large cooling plant here, with six cooling towers, and it is a huge challenge to keep this big black glass building cool in the middle of the desert. So, having indoor climate quality became our initial focus. With the Power BI dashboard, we can take into account the weather outside the stadium, the predicted temperature and the rate of electricity consumption for the day and make an informed decision about how we will operate the plant during the day to prepare the stadium for events. ”, he explains.

According to the executive, the dashboard extracts raw data from the building management system and combines it with electrical and climate data to provide the necessary information for cooling consumption, presenting this data in real time, which helps the administration to take the right actions at the right time. According to Wright, this has a huge and very positive impact on his work. “The panel makes my job as a facility operator much easier. When I can quickly get all the data I need quickly, I can ensure that the building remains at a comfortable temperature of 21 to 23°C, even when it’s 45°C outside in the summer, for example. The Power BI dashboard also provides me with trend analysis and supporting data so that, based on this information, I can provide more accurate responses to my senior leadership with suggestions on how we can best operate the stadium.”
