(CNN) — American sports journalist Grant Wahl died while covering the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, sending shock and grief to the sports world.
An eyewitness told CNN that Wal “collapsed” in the media area during his coverage of the Argentina-Netherlands match at Lusail Stadium on Friday evening.
“The entire American Football family is saddened to learn that we have lost Grant Wahl,” US Soccer said in a statement on its official Twitter account.
Grant Wahl complained of “tightness in his chest” and said he sought help at the World Cup Medical Clinic, during an episode of Futbol that was published on December 6, four days before his death.
Wahl said he sought help at the medical clinic in the World Cup media centre, believing he had bronchitis, adding that he was given cough medicine and ibuprofen, and felt better shortly thereafter.
