The Emotional Wellness Initiative: AMTM’s Commitment to Public Transport Operators

The Mexican Association of Transportation and Mobility (AMTM) has launched a pilot program aimed at addressing the physical and emotional health of public transportation drivers in Mexico City. According to Nicolás Mejía Pedroza, executive director of the AMTM, the stress and exhaustion faced by operators has increased key problems in the sector, such as accidents and the growing shortage of drivers.

Traffic congestion, long workdays, and lack of nutritional care are some of the factors that affect the physical and emotional health of drivers. Mejía Pedroza points out that these problems not only impact the quality of life of operators but also represent a risk for users and the operation of public transport in general.

According to official statistics, in 2023, two out of ten road deaths were caused by public transport and freight vehicles. Moreover, it is estimated that by 2028, the shortage of operators will reach 106,000 vacancies, worsening the current operational situation of the sector.

AMTM’s Pilot Program to Improve Drivers’ Health

As part of the measures to mitigate these challenges, AMTM has launched a pilot program focused on the operators of the company Conexión Centro-Aeropuerto, who operate Line 4 of the Metrobús. This initiative will provide private medical services at low cost or fully covered by the company, enabling drivers to receive comprehensive medical diagnoses and specific care aimed at improving their physical and emotional health.

“This effort seeks to professionalize public transportation services, improving the health and well-being of drivers, which will also benefit users,” said Mejía Pedroza.

The program is being implemented on Metrobús Line 4 due to the challenges operators face while navigating through the Historic Center, where traffic is complicated by street vendors, protests, and congestion.
