Microsoft-backed OpenAI said that GBT Chat users will be able to access French and Spanish news content from the French newspaper Le Monde and Brisa Media under a partnership with the two media organizations.

The company said that the content will also be used to train generative artificial intelligence models, amid the growing popularity of artificial intelligence technology and its impact in various sectors, Reuters reported.

Louis-Dreyfus, CEO of Le Monde, said: “Our partnership with OpenAI is a strategic step to ensure the dissemination of reliable information to AI users, and to protect our journalistic integrity and revenue stream.”

Last year, global publishing company Axel Springer and the Associated Press signed agreements with OpenAI to explore opportunities to use generative artificial intelligence in news. Meanwhile, other news organizations struggle with issues like copyright infringement and fair compensation when using their content to train large language models.

The American newspaper “The New York Times” filed a lawsuit against “OpenAI” and “Microsoft” last year on charges of using millions of its articles without permission, and news organizations such as “The Intercept”, “Raw Story” and “Alternet” also filed lawsuits. OpenAI was sued in federal court in New York last month on charges of misusing its articles to train an artificial intelligence system at ChatGPT.
