The American company iBasis has suffered a computer attack in recent days. It could be used as a data carrier owned by Swiss operators.
Swisscom and Sunrise UPC have confirmed that they are aware of this ransomware. They are checking whether some of their customers are concerned, their spokespersons told Keystone-ATS on Sunday, confirming information from the daily Le Temps website.
“We are aware of a ransomware attack at iBasis,” Sabrina Hubacher, spokeswoman for Swisscom, told Keystone-ATS on Sunday evening, confirming information published on the website of the daily Le Temps. Swisscom has no direct commercial relations with iBasis, apart from roaming connections via operators who could use iBasis as a carrier for data transmission, she nevertheless specified.
The Swiss operator is in close contact with its partners to verify whether Swisscom customer data has been affected and, if so, which ones. “We take into account any new discovery,” said the spokesperson.
On the side of Sunrise UPC, we say more or less the same thing, specifying working with iBasis in the field of international MMS. “We are still checking whether our customers’ data is affected,” replied Keystone-ATS Rolf Ziebold, spokesperson for Sunrise UPC. Also contacted, Salt has not yet responded.
According to Le Temps, the hacking in the United States ‘closely concerned Swisscom, Sunrise UPC and Salt’. Unknown to the general public, iBasis provides international services to hundreds of telecom operators on the planet. The cyberattack led to the temporary publication, on the darknet, of information on the communications made by the customers of these operators, writes Le Temps.
