The new antigen test can detect the Covid-19 and influenza viruses. Already available in some pharmacies, it is not reimbursed by Social Security.
A new antigen test combined with screening for the Covid-19 and influenza virus is now on sale in France. In a context of triple epidemic in France (Covid, flu and bronchiolitis), it facilitates diagnosis and improves patient care.
This is a “multiplex” test. Equipped with a swab, it can detect two pathologies. Only a sample of the nasal mucus is necessary. It takes between 15 to 30 minutes to get the results. The tests have an accuracy rate of between 96 and 99%.
“It’s real progress, it makes it possible to prescribe fewer antibiotics and to justify it to the patient. It’s an excellent tool for therapeutic education”rejoiced Jean-Paul Hamon, honorary president of the Federation of Doctors of France, in the columns of the Journal du Dimanche on January 1.
Test refunded soon
The test is available in some pharmacies and doctor’s offices. For the time being, he is not reimbursed by Social Security. It is charged 5 euros to the patient in pharmacies. The Union of Dispensary Pharmacists’ Unions insistently asks HAS to position itself on the performance and management of these combined tests and asks for an accelerated procedure in order to respond to the urgency of the triple epidemic.
