Last year, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region saw an unprecedented influx of tourists. The Calanques site has therefore launched a communication campaign to limit the number of visitors. It has partnered with the Waze app, which could now change our destination.
How to avoid the over-frequentation of French tourist places, traffic jams around protected areas and to be preserved? In the calanque de Sormiou, near Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), some residents can no longer bear this influx which saturates the small roads. In an attempt to limit this mass tourism, the region Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur has joined forces with the application mobile GPS Waze.
Concretely, if the attendance gauge of a tourist site is exceeded, Waze will offer visitors another place in the vicinity. They will be able to go to a less known beach, or discover a less frequented hiking trail. This experiment was already tried last year, and was considered satisfactory. “Last year, it was 8% of motorists who agreed to change their visit plan, and this year, we hope to reach 10%“, Explain François de Canson, president of the Paca regional tourism committee. The device will be launched next July in eight national and regional parks in Paca.
