An Argentine sailboat sank in the Río de la Plata: 12 crew members rescued

This Sunday, twelve crew members who were sailing on the Silver river on an Argentine-flagged sailboat near the coast of Colonia, Uruguay, had to be rescued by the Uruguayan Navy after the vessel suffered serious damage that caused its sinking.

According to official sources, the sailboat, named “Carpe Diem”issued a request for assistance around 10:30 a.m., which was received by the Prefecture of the Port of Colonia (PRECO) and in which they assured that it was near the Farallon Island Lighthouse. “with a leak and no rudder”.

Immediately afterwards, the Sea Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) sent a semi-rigid boat to the area to provide assistance to affected people. At the same time, the support of two other vessels from the Honorary Association of Maritime and River Rescue (ADES) was requested.

A boat from the Port of Colonia and a boat from Juan Lacaze joined the joint operation of the Uruguayan Navy and ADES, in which an attempt was made to tow the sailboat towards San Gabriel Island. However, water ingress could not be controlledso two hours later it was decided to save only the crew members.

The group of people on board was loaded onto a Prefecture boat and then taken to land with the help of another sailboat that was in the area and one of the “ADES 10” fast rescue boats.

As for the Argentine flag vessel, the “Carpe Diem“, term sunken in the waters of the Río de la Plata, with the half of the mast visiblealthough a last attempt was made to keep it afloat with a water pump.

The operation was valued as positiveeven with the material loss involved, since all the crew of the sailboat were rescued.

After the rescue, the twelve people were in good healthalthough one of them presented signs of hypothermia and another suffered a possible muscle injury. Both received emergency medical assistance at the Port of Colonia.
