In favor: The undisputed protagonist of Christmas desserts

By Giuliana Luchetti

What would Christmas be without sweet bread? Just as many wait for this time of year to delight in traditional dishes such as the iconic pancake tower or the much-loved the winch sinksthere are those who can’t wait to get to the moment of the toast to taste a good sweet bread.

The fact is that, in addition to being a classic of the Christmas tradition and having a guaranteed presence on sweet tables, this wonderful work of the bakery has had the ability to adapt to all palates over the years.

Sweet bread is the member with the most history of the sweet table. Although its origin is not known with certainty, it has been consumed in every context and with a great variety of changes in its ingredients: the originals come with fruits, but there are also without fruits, others with spices, and now, for the most modern , exist with dulce de leche and chocolate chips.

Furthermore, it should be noted that a good sweet bread is not necessarily one that costs an arm and a leg. There are some options that can be found on supermarket shelves that have nothing to envy of those that were kneaded at home. In fact, some are much fluffier and moister, which makes them much more addictive.

Be that as it may, there is no way that sweet bread is not the protagonist of the sweet table on the 24th. This Christmas delicacy is a typical dessert that cannot be missing at the end of the year celebrations not only because of its irreplaceable flavor, but because It is, without a doubt, a dessert that invites you to share it and, in these times, the most important thing is to share it with your loved ones.

Against: It is the slush mint of the sweet table

By Brenda Petrone Veliz

Of all the Argentine Christmas traditions of gastronomy, sweet bread with polished fruit is one of the most controversial. The dough looks like wet stuffed hair and almost always comes drier than Argentinians’ pockets (especially the packaged breads).

The worst of all is that infernal invasion of disgusting candied squares. What’s the point of making a dough worse with mini marbles that don’t even have the color of fruit? At this point it is important to clarify that, given the way things are in the country, it is appreciated to have at least this dessert to celebrate the holidays with family or friends. But that doesn’t stop it from being a horrible food.

Pastry chefs from all over the country tried to do the impossible so that this rancid construction of orange blossom water and dried fruits of dubious origin could be moderately edible, but they were unable to amend the damage to the palate caused by the bakeries that sell it packaged. Not even the infallible chocolate chips were enough to make him cool.

This pastry of yesteryear is the slushy mint of the sweet table. If a person chooses that flavor in the same kilo of ice cream that contains other (true) flavors, it ruins the lives of others because everything is impregnated. The same thing happens with sweet bread: If at least one person likes it, they open it before the toast and the smell intersects with the true delights of the night: sugar candy and Mantecol.

I don’t know when it became normal for the Christmas box to necessarily contain sweet bread. Since not everyone likes it, it tends to accumulate in the pantry for days until someone determined puts it for breakfast or gives it to the misunderstood member of the family who will gladly receive that huge pot of bakery disappointment.

Every time I think about sweet bread it reminds me of those old children’s Christmas movies where Santa Claus gave coal to children who had misbehaved all year. It seems that fiction became reality and that those children, as adults, no longer left the list and every year they receive a gift of sweet bread.
