Insurers are drawing up an initial quantified assessment of the damage suffered by local authorities, businesses and individuals in France. The bill amounts to 650 million euros, according to the Professional Federation France insurers. An amount that could increase in the coming days.

Urban violence in France, following the death of Nahel, 17, killed on June 27 by a policeman, caused a lot of damage. The cost of damage, which can be compensated by insurance companies, is three times higher than for 2005 urban violence. And yet they lasted three times as long.
The nature of the damage is also quite different, compared to 2005. This year, claims on professional property represent 55% of the 650 million euros. And those on the property of local authorities 35%, specifies France Assureurs. The rest concerns damage, suffered by individuals for their cars. The bill for the events was estimated at less than half – 280 million euros – last week. This bill could still increase because most insurers have extended the claim reporting period to 30 days instead of five.
The main businesses affected by the riots are tobacco shops and bank branches. Next come food stores, sports stores, fast food restaurants, gyms and DIY stores. On the community side, nearly 15,000 public buildings were affected.
In total, more than 3,700 people have been taken into custody in connection with these riotsincluding some 1,160 minors, according to figures from the Ministry of Justice, which last Friday reported nearly 400 incarcerations.
