The first case in which one of the newly built helipads needed for the start of the air medical assistance project in Bulgaria was used is already a fact. However, this did not happen with the already delivered Bulgarian helicopter, but with a helicopter hired by the organizers of a round of the Skiing World Cup in Bansko from the Slovak HEMS operator Air Transport Europe.

A Canadian skier injured during training, who has polytrauma, was transported in 28 minutes from Bansko to the roof area of St. Catherine Hospital. From there, he was taken by ambulance to “Pirogov”, where he was placed in an anti-shock room, without danger to his life.

The news was announced by Transport Minister Georgi Gvozdeikov. He specifies that the logistics of the entire operation are provided by “Bulgaria Heli Med Service” (the Bulgarian operator of the “air ambulances”). A Bulgarian pilot was also on board the helicopter that carried out the transport.

The first Bulgarian medical helicopter will start duty in March. We should have two more by the end of the year.
