An operation to make doctors shudder

Jonathan Bernier has come a long way.

In an interview with Jean-Charles Lajoie on Thursday, the Devils goaltender agreed to go into detail about his hip operation which caused him to miss almost the entire 2021-2022 season.

“It was an operation that takes between an hour and an hour 30 minutes and it took him three hours and 20 minutes to redo my hip. There was a lot of damage that they couldn’t see during the x-rays. When I woke up, he told me that it had been 15 or 20 years since he had seen such a messed up hip.”

Bernier admitted to having found the situation very difficult, but he believes that it was the best thing to do for the rest of his career.

“It was a very difficult year. When you sign a new contract in a new city and with a new team, that was really not what I had in mind. It happened during training camp and I wasn’t able to come back from that injury. With the management of the Devils, we decided that it was the best decision for me to have the operation.

The Quebecer also felt helpless at one point in the season when the Devils had all kinds of problems in goal.

“It was not easy to see the team being a bit left out with the goalkeepers. We were supposed to be able to help them, but me and Mackenzie Blackwood weren’t there. I hope that next year we will have better results and that we will start in the right way.

Bernier is however optimistic for the future, he who was really impressed by the hatching of Jack Hughes.

“I think players who take a little longer to develop are used to having space on the ice. Players like Patrick Kane and Jack Hughes have exceptional vision and hands. When they go up in the NHL, they have less space. But there we see that he is starting to gain respect and that he has a little more time. I was extremely impressed. It was a big year for him and I think he and the team needed that.”
