an unknown Meta VR headset, even more satisfying than Apple’s

New images of an unknown virtual reality headset have surfaced during a conference organized with one of the experts in charge of the file, at Meta. Douglas Lanman designs screens for Mark Zuckerberg’s company, more precisely within the department Reality Labs Research.

In the video, available below, we can see very clear renderings of what one of the company’s next frames could look like. Its code name today would be “Mirror Lake”, but the device could be marketed alongside the Quest headsets already available for several months.

Among the new features of the device, it is above all its format that appeals to us. We can indeed see that this model seems particularly light, even if this remains to be confirmed. On the other hand, it is certain that the design is much more compact than the mixed reality headsets offered by Meta today.

What release date for this model?

According to information already revealed by Meta in the past, the Mirror Lake mixed reality headset could see the light of day in the second half of the current decade. Understand: from 2025 only. By then, it is rumored that its main competitor, namely Apple, could also have presented a more mobile version of its Vision Pro. The device unveiled at the Worldwide Developer Conference will arrive in the Apple firm’s first stores at the start of next year, in the United States. We don’t yet know the planned release schedule for the European Union, however.

The Vision Pro also offers functionality relatively similar to that of the model presented by Douglas Lanman. This is the “EyeSight” option, quite destabilizing at first but potentially very useful in the future. This activates the transparency of the screen, so that the user’s gaze is visible from the outside. In short, it’s a good way to join an ongoing conversation with loved ones, in the same room, without having to leave the Vision Pro.

Teleworking in the crosshairs

With a model as compact as this potential Mirror Lake, Meta could also join the visionOS value proposition with an operating system that gives pride of place to our desktop apps. Today, the group’s mixed reality headset is mainly chosen for its gaming features, but these could quickly give way to more professional use.

To do this, however, the weight of the mount must be drastically reduced: today, even the best Quest does not do the job over time. Judge for yourself: in the video below, a creator tried to work with a virtual desktop using the device. But the experience was not really the most satisfactory…
