Russian forward Matvei Michkov, whom many Montreal fans would have liked to see drafted fifth overall, was seriously considered by the Anaheim Ducks, who had the second selection in the National Hockey League amateur auction is held in Nashville on June 28-29.

At least that’s what Michkov’s agent in Russia, Sergei Fedotov, said in a Sport Express media show on YouTube. His remarks were later transcribed by sports.ru.

“Two days before the draft, I got a call from Anaheim scout Konstantin Krylov. A videoconference took place. Anaheim seriously considered Matvei Michkov,” Fedotov said.

The latter also denied rumors that Michkov wanted to join the Washington Capitals.

“For different reasons, the Coyotes and the Capitals are two clubs he didn’t want to play for,” Fedotov said.

In second place, the Ducks preferred the Swede Leo Carlsson to Michkov, who in turn was claimed in seventh place by the Philadelphia Flyers.
