Anatel seizes 1.4 million pirated TV Boxes and blocks 743 pirated IPTV addresses

Anatel is redoubling its efforts to combat the use and commercialization of pirated TV Boxes, also known as “gatonet”. According to the agency, around 1.4 million of these clandestine TV boxes have already been removed from circulation, through inspection actions carried out since the beginning of the year, which resulted in more than 500,000 blocked accesses.

Anatel Celebrates Blocking of 743 Pirate IPTV Addresses in Brazil

Anatel revealed, during the SET Expo 2023 Congress, that 22 operations were carried out against pirated streaming, resulting in the blocking 743 IP addresses and 54 domains. In the operation carried out on June 28, 184 providers joined together to overthrow domains and IP addresses that illegally transmitted pay-TV programming.

According to the entity, approximately 1.4 million of these illegal TV boxes were removed from the market, totaling an estimated value of R$ 400.8 million, through inspection actions carried out since the beginning of the year. In the operation carried out on April 20 alone, more than 500,000 clandestine accesses were impacted and had their operation interrupted.

Anatel creates laboratory to end pirated IPTV in Brazil

Combat IPTV piracy in Brazil

To prevent piracy in Brazil, Anatel is going to have a laboratory specialized in analyzing IPTV equipment, such as the TV Box. These devices are used to transmit pay-TV content illegally, harming legitimate companies and copyright holders .

ABTA will be responsible for setting up and equipping the laboratory, in addition to providing special training for Anatel employees. Thus, the agency will have the capacity to carry out independent analyzes to identify pirate activities and combat them. Does Anatel know who uses pirated TV Box?

Anatel will not spy on every home in Brazil to find out who uses pirated TV Box or any other type of clandestine IPTV system. This would harm the privacy of Brazilian citizens. So, to contain the use of these pirated services, the agency says that it will “cut the evil in the bud”, for take down the very access centers of illegal IPTVs.
