Justine Triet’s feature film is undoubtedly the favorite. The film won the Palme d’Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, and has been a hit at the box office since its theatrical release.

The jury responsible for selecting the films in the running to represent France at the Oscars is this year made up of 7 professionals from the cinema industry: the exporters Sabine Chemaly and Tanja Meissner, the producers Patrick Wachsberger and Charles Gillibert, the director Olivier Assayas, the director Mounia Meddour and the composer Alexandre Desplat.

The next step is the hearing of the producers and exporters of each selected film on September 21. The jury will then vote. The chosen work must submit its application to the Academy of Oscars by October 2, 2023.

It is possible that the latter will not select the chosen film and that France will not be represented at the Oscars.

The Oscar for best international film, formerly named Oscar for best foreign language film, has existed since 1948. French director René Clément won it twice in 1951 with Beyond the gates, et Forbidden Games in 1953.

Among the French films having received the award, we note in particular My uncle by Jacques Tati, A man and a woman by Claude Lellouche, The American night by François Truffaut. France has not won this prize since Indochina by Régis Wargnier in 1993.
