Ancestral Cannibalism: Evidence of Early Humans Eating Each Other’s Meat Revealed in Recent Study

A recent study revealed that the ancestors of early humans may have eaten each other’s meat, according to signs of a bone dating back nearly 1.5 million years.

And 9 “cutting” marks on a fossilized human tibia indicate that ancient humans “slaughtered and possibly ate each other,” according to the study, which was reported by the scientific magazine “National Geographic”.

The tibia is a longitudinal bone in the lower extremity of a human being, and it represents, along with the fibula bone that parallels it, the human leg.

The fossilized bone was found among a collection of bones at the Nairobi National Museum in Kenya.

A paleoanthropologist at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, Brianna Bobiner, had been studying the bones for “bite marks” from extinct animals that may have preyed on ancient human ancestors.

But she did come across cuts that looked like they were made with stone tools.

And all the cut marks seemed to point in the same direction, which is likely to be that the hand that used a stone tool made the marks one after the other, and with the same fist.

“These cut marks look very similar to what I’ve seen on animal fossils that were being processed for human consumption,” Buebner said in a press release.

She added: “It seems likely that the flesh of this leg was eaten by humans for the purpose of nutrition.”

Study co-author Michael Banty, a paleoanthropologist at Colorado State University, also created 3D models to understand the shapes of the cut marks on the bones.

Panty’s analysis came to the same conclusion, though Bubiner did not tell him that she believed the cut marks were made by stone tools.

It is not clear which type of ancient human ancestor the tibia belonged to, because this type of bone does not provide as much taxonomic information as the skull or jaw bones.
