Archaeologists carrying out excavations at Mortsel in Flanders have found a “goblet” bearing a hitherto unknown Roman slogan.
Although the south of Antwerp was much less densely built in Roman times than it is today, several ancient agricultural settlements are present, notably at Mortsel where archaeologists from the Flemish Heritage Center carried out excavations.
Several objects were unearthed: a sacrificial cup, a dish, ceramic material and a mysterious cup bearing the inscription “Avocado”.
The archaeologists consulted Professor Christian Laes of the University of Antwerp, a specialist in classical antiquity, regarding this hitherto unknown slogan. “The meaning of the verb ‘avocare’ has changed over time,” explains Laes. Originally, the word meant “to take away something or someone” or “to redirect”. Later, it turned into “amuse”. Avoca Te” – here in the imperative – can therefore be translated as “amuse”. It is probably an informal expression that was used during festivities where the wine was flowing,” he explains.
