“I’m against any war. But I’m also against human aggression and hatred, which take on devastating proportions every day. Why does everyone always shout that sport and politics should not be mixed – but as soon as it comes to Russia, they forget this principle completely?” the 33-year-old wrote, adding: “I’m proud to be Russian, and I don’t understand why athletes have to suffer now.”
On Tuesday, a group led by Yarmolenko and Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City spoke out in a video message for an end to the war.
In addition to the two Premier League stars, other Ukrainian players also had their say in the two-minute video. In it they called for “showing the truth about the war in Ukraine by all possible means” and “opposing Russian propaganda”.
